WEDNESDAY 16TH
FUTURE SHORTS – The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, 24 Church St, Falmouth, TR11 3EG – 7:30pm – £6.50 / £5 conc.
Future Shorts are still running their spring programme featuring short films from big name directors Spike Jonze and Sam Taylor-Wood, as well as several other high quality short flicks to satiate you. This week they’re in Cornwall. Nice.
THURSDAY 17TH
PUTIN’S KISS – Picturehouse Stratford East, Salway Road, London, E15 1BX – 8:30pm – £6.50
As part of the Dogwoof Docs season, the Picture House in Stratford is showing Putin’s Kiss. Not so much about Russia’s totally legit elected president and all-round rough tough not-at-all-gay macho man, Vladimir Putin, the film focuses more on the political machine that operates around him. In it we follow Masha, a 19-year old girl who works for the doggedly pro-Putin Nashi organization, which aims to stifle opposition views and voices. But when Masha herself is up for election, she starts to question her role in politics.

SURVIVING PROGRESS + Q&A – The Tricycle Theatre, 269 Kilburn High Road, London, NW6 7JR – 8:30pm – £7 / £5 Conc.
This Martin Scorsese produced documentary looks at the big questions; how do we deal with our advancements? With countries becoming ever richer and consuming ever more, is it possible for supply to keep on meeting demand? Can the inventiveness and resourcefulness of humanity once again kick us on to a new age of growth? Whatever happened to Kevin Costner? The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Marius Kwint, co-curator of the Wellcome Collection, and Dr. Jonathan Aldred, an economics lecturer from Oxford University.

0117 FILM CHALLENGE – Bristol – 11am – FREE
Had enough of all the Olympics hype? Think it’s largely a vainglorious spunking of £12 billion for the benefit of people better connected than you? Want to escape into film and create your own reality, unaffected by the Olympics? Well fuck you, this is Britain, so everything is Olympics until further notice. The Encounters Festival is hosting a challenge, inspired by the arrival of the Olympic fart flame in Bristol, where filmmakers will have 117 hours to make a film inspired by sport, games and play. If that doesn’t tickle your pickle, then maybe the fact that it’s FREE TO ENTER and there’s a £1000 PRIZE FOR THE WINNER will. Register by 12pm today to take part, the challenge itself starts Saturday.

TOWN OF RUNNERS + Q&A W/JERRY ROTHWELL – Gate Picturehouse, 87 Notting Hill Gate, London, W11 3JZ – 10pm – £10.10
A disproportionate amount of great long-distance runners have come from Ethiopia, specifically from the Arsi region, and really specifically from the town of Bekoji. Runners from his small town, with a population of just 16,000, won more gold medals (4) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics than Canada! Town Of Runners is a documentary that focuses on the next generation of athletes from this place, and their desires to emulate their hometown heroes. The screening is followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Jerry Rothwell.
